Five Things To Remember When Starting An Offshore Program

Tandy Gold had to learn on the fly about how to put together an offshore outsourcing program when she was hired by FleetBoston Financial. Here’s some of her do’s and don’ts:

1. Just do it, even if it’s politically difficult.
2. Don’t lock yourself into a single-vendor relationship for more than three years.
3. Don’t over-emphasize knowledge of your applications. Look beyond just U.S.-based outsourcing firms, too. Try to include an Indian one.
4. Make sure you set expectations with your management team, especially since the cost-benefit of such a program generally entails a long-term payoff.
5. If you can, try to do some human resources planning upfront. Any workers outplaced by the program should be done so gracefully.
